I remember once playing through Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on my Gameboy Advanced. I don't recall what happened exactly but my saved files got deleted. So I had to replay the game from the very beginning. I was like two thirds of the way through the game.

I also remember once playing through the third act of Halo 2 on Legendary (that's the highest difficulty setting in the game). I died half way through the final level and rage quit the game. I went back to finish later and found myself three levels behind (and that too one third of the way through on the longest and most difficult level in the entire Halo series).

They can't do that unless their corporate masters give them permission.
