Been raining here for 3 days non-stop. Yesterday when the rain stopped for a while the sky was so blue it almost made me forget climate change. Lucknow and Shimla are equally chilly rn.

I was trying out a certain app on my laptop (work-related) and later uninstalled it. I checked the box that said "provide feedback on why you uninstalled", because I know this app team genuinely listens to suggestions.

Anyway... I expected Firefox to open up (as it is set as default browser). Edge opened up instead.

This is unacceptable. I have Firefox set to default, but that dog-shit browser still opens up feedback pages and such.

 

How dare they. Should be nuked.

 

Used Wintoys and Wise Uninstaller to forcefully uninstall Edge from my laptop completely.

Guess how much disk space was freed? 2.16 GB! And that was despite me clearing all of the cached data and browsing data. So not only was MS Edge acting as adware/spyware, it was hogging as much disk space as the original Halo: Combat Evolved for PC and Star Wars: Republic Commando for Windows. Hell, there are entire Linux Distros that occupy much less storage space than that.

Not only did I use Wise Uninstaller to outright remove Edge from my system, I also used O&O ShutUp10 to disable a lot of privacy-invading features and even disable Co-pilot.

The best part is that both these apps - if you approve - automatically create system restore points for you, which you can fall back on in case something gets fukked.

By the way: After removing Edge and disabling a lot of shit with ShutUp10, I found that my laptop's idle RAM usage went down by 4% or so. That is about 0.64 GB freed up.

 

That is the problem. Firefox does show as my default browser in the settings menu. However, Windows 10/11 are both hard-coded to open up certain links/pages in Edge and only Edge. And you can't even change it in the Settings protocol formats page. You could change it previously by editing the registry, but that has been impossible since 2024.

Only EU users can easily disable or remove Edge, because of new laws the EU passed that made it illegal for MS to make Edge uninstall-able.

ShutUp10 doesn't even need to be installed. You just click on the downloaded package and it works. As for its makers: From what I know, O&O is an ethical hacker group that despises Windows and wants people to shift to Linux. They even say Mac OS is a better option than Windows. The ShutUp10 tool also has the backing of Zack Shutt, who owns his own PC building & repair business and knows shit about Windows. So it must be okay, I guess?

As for Chris Titus: His tool is available for audit on GitHub and other open repositories, which means it is fully open source and free-to-inspect for anyone. If there was anything untoward in his software, it would have already been flagged by quite a few parties.
