The Tavern: The Birth of an Adventure

*Opens the door and steps in, approaches the barkeep and orders a water.*

 

*The door to the Bar opens once more, and in walks a woman. Dessa slowly makes her way to the bar, and gives a shy smile to the few people that are already in the Bar. When she reaches the bar she makes an order.* I would like a beer please. *After placing her drink order Dessa sits on a bar stool, and waits.*

 

The man slowly tilts his head, his fingers still curled around his own glass, albeit of water. He lifts the glass to his lips, tilts it back slightly and sighs as the cool liquid runs down his throat. He sets the glass back on the counter and wipes his mouth on the back of one sleeve.

"You from around here?" He asks from under the mask he's wearing. "Haven't seen you before."

 

The door swings open and with an energetic flash a woman enters her left arm extended outwards still from the action of throwing the door open. She shouts out to the barkeep for her usual a Brandy Rickey. The Barkeep looks down as he produces her order. The girl makes her way to the bar, doing a spin and a twirl on her way there as lively as ever. She pulls herself up to the seat her feet dangling in the air.

 

The cloaked and armored man spins slowly on his stool, raising an eyebrow below his mask where no on can see it, realizes the futility of the gesture and shrugs. There seemed to be all sorts of oddities crawling out of the woodwork today. He decided if you couldn't beat them, join them!

"I'll have a whiskey on the rocks." He flagged the bartender and held out a open palm on the counter, catching the glass as it slid across the wooden surface, quickly tipping the glass back and draining the contents in one swallow. "That's the good stuff."

 

The girl peaks a glance at the masked man curious of what he looks like beneath it. She swings her body back and forth as she twirls the liquid in her cup taking a small sip from it. She feels the liquid go down her throat. "Nice, nice nice. Good brandy today!" She tries to hide her interest but it is written all over her face and through her body language more so as she watches him down an entire glass down in one go. She is fixated hardly noticing the other patrons at the moment at least until something else pulls her attention away like a light to a moth.

 

The man felt the woman's gaze on him and he slowly turned, lifted a gloved hand and waved before slowly turning back to the counter. He reached beneath his cloak and pulled out a large book with a red bookmark and set it tenderly on the counter, curled a finger around the page to the left of the bookmark and gently pried it open, settling back on his stool to read, occasionally flipping the page to continue.

 

She watches him turn and open up a book she cannot see what he is reading. While interested she rather not be a creep so she pries her attention onto other things like her drink that has hardly been touched. Still her imagination runs wild with random thoughts. She pulls out out a pad from a satchel and begins to draw on a page already filled with random partially completed drawings ranging from a girl surrounded by flowers to a carny behind the shell game and much more, she draws a man with his head tilted back looking straight to the sky as he pours some sort of liquid into his mouth.

 

The figure carefully placed his bookmark to mark the page he was reading and slowly closed the book, hiding it once more on his person beneath the cloak. He spun and tilted his head slightly, glancing down at the scribbles on the paper.

"What are you drawing?" The voice was a deep baritone and rumbled slightly. "I do not recognize them."

 

She sketches what appears to be tusk growing out of the man's chin. She turns the page slightly to get at another angle adding some hatching to the drawing to give it depth and shades as well as somewhat obscuring the face. "This is a man who is downing his drink as if he is an endless void." Her tone is chipper and excitable as she then begins to draw the object the man is drinking from it appears like a goat's horn.
"the others are well others... hmmm that girl I saw one and her boyfriend or at least I think they were dating I really don't know uhm uh I just put my own thoughts into things but a gust of wind blew the hibiscus flowers from around her it was quite nice so I etched it into my memory and then drew it and uh I lost a lot of money playing the shell game." she rambles on hardly taking a moment to breath, her voice never losing its cheerfulness. She puts a bit more details into the horn and puts her pencil down rubbing the horn to darken the bottom and the curve.

Finished she looks at her drawing satisfied and writes in a title "The Mysterious man who drank the ocean"

"Out of curiosity what were you reading?" her eyes fixed on him no longer trying to hide it, her feet swing back and forth from her seat like a child's.

 

"Interesting," he muses as his gaze follows her to each picture, absorbing the contents of each."How do you decide what to draw and what not to draw?"

He tilts his head again, his hands withdrawing the book from his cloak again, holding the book tenderly. He sets it on the table and slides it to down towards her, gently flips it open to the title page. The script is ancient and looks like a bunch of squiggles with dashes through various letters, occasional dots and other strange annotations.

He realizes she would not be able to translate it. "It is called They Died, As They Lived. It is similar to the Illiad."

 

"I've read that story before the Iliad! It was really colorful and I would sometimes imagine myself inside of the book ya know... I would imagine myself helping the city during the siege being somewhat of a hero. If this story you are reading is similar to that it must be pretty darn good." She writes the name of the book on the bottom of the page in her pad even copying the way it was written with a translation for herself under it.

She smiles then taking another long waited sip of her drink which had long warmed up to about room temperature. The girl then looks peacefully at her sketches "somethings when you see them you feel them, its less knowing or deciding what to draw but discovering and feeling what to draw. Also uhm uh." She says tilting her head a bit and moving her mouth around as she thinks her eyes tilted up as she stares up to nothing contemplating her thoughts and words. "When I draw something I have to feel it extend as apart of me if I don't I just end up with these" she says turning the pages a bit to a page full of incomplete drawings with scratches and eraser marks throughout. "I thought I wanted to draw these but as I got to work on them it it just stopped coming to mind what I was drawing. I mean I knew but well I did not." Her voice is calmer than before it is soft.

 

"You like to read?" He asked, raising an eyebrow behind his mask. "It is rare to find someone else who is fond of the same novels as me. Perhaps there is hope for humanity yet, then."

He glanced down to see the incomplete sketches. "I see. It makes sense in a logical fashion. What do you see when you look at me then? Do you feel the urge to draw, to put pen or pencil to paper and sketch what your mind's eye sees?"

 

No, I'm not from around here. I lived in the northern parts of the Realm for a while. But decided to move down here to see new places. *Dessa tells the strange man sitting next to her. She picks up the beer in front of her, and sips. Dessa turns in her seat, and leans her elbows on the bar so she can look around the place better.*

 

She hears him say "hope for humanity yet, then" and her mind goes wild.... she begins to talk quitely and quickly to herself gathering her random thoughts she speaks "is fear tosg é i ndáiríre" (he really is a tusk man). She turns her face away and then calms herself.
"Reading can be a lot of fun, uhm my teacher got me into it, he at first would force me to read stories the Iliad was like that but often once I get started I get sucked into the world and its kind of hard to get me out. Later it became less of a force and more of an reward for hard work" she says twirling the remaining liquid in her drink.

"I uh uhm well do you want to be drawn... uhm maybe take up a pose of some sort uh" she says trying to avoid answering his question properly.
