It's a bit of a mix of everything. Obviously there are the few people who want everything to be bad for clicks. But then I also feel like companies are hiring largely incompetent retards. Then you have terrible management and then the shareholder cancer. The whole thing from top to bottom is basically fucked. The shareholders latched on because they saw gaming growth as Hollywood 2.0 and now it's speed running death. The thing is, if you were going into something because it was a good investment and already making good profit, why wouldn't you just leave it alone? Especially when you have no ******* clue about anything of it.

It's the same with the optimization issues plaguing shit, to me it seems like an easy problem to solve? Stop using performance heavy shit like Nanite, Raytracing, etc. They also just need to target better performance on consoles and/or use actual lower end pc hardware from like probably 2018 - 2020 to target 1080p 60fps native and it'll "magically" run great on everything.

The thing is: I have a feeling that the people who make and publish games know this shite. But they don't give a damn, since they would rather cater to a smaller sample of ass-clowns with too much money who, rather than story and gameplay value, give more of a damn about how brilliant be the lighting under some random ass tree that they will see only for a moment or how good the shadows under some chick's boobs look.

Funny though at least half the games released 10 years ago look better than half the shit we get now lmao.

Crysis 2 (2011) and 3 (2013) still look better than half the AAA games from today. The former will run on max detail settings at 1080p on a mid-range GPU from 2012. The latter will run on max detail settings at 1080p on a mid-range GPU from 2016.

Yup. Even if fidelity isn't the highest, there was some great stylization back then.

Man, I would gladly take a new game with emphasis on stylization and story rather than stupid fukken visual slop. I don't care if it looks like 2001's Halo CE as long as it has good story, characters, artwork, and no artificial bs barriers to exploration (looking at you Halo 3 and Reach).

For me gameplay is king. I couldn't care if a game had no story, as long as the gameplay is good. Just like I would take "bad"/stylized graphics over higher fidelity if it ran well. In fact, I think that sometimes games are making the mistake of the game itself being inhibited by the story. Best example I can think of is Monster Hunter Wilds. Every other issue aside, they genuinely get in the way of you just playing the game to force you into a shitty story no one gives a **** about. If I could, I would delete the story in the game. It impedes both just normal solo play as well as multiplayer. Genuinely a blight. Sometimes I think some games focus too hard on the story and neglect the thing that really matters, good gameplay.

You can do both. I mean have gameplay and story. There are series that pull both off to great effect. KOTOR 1 and 2, Republic Commando, the original Revenge of the Sith game for the PS2, Shadow of the Colossus, the original Mass Effect trilogy, Crysis 2 and 3 (despite the campaigns being quite short), Asura's Wrath, the God of War series, the Halo series, the Dishonoured series and so many more.

I'm not saying you can't, but to me it feels like there are just many cases where they try and convert games that typically have a story on the back burner (nothing wrong with that) into a story-driven game, and it just falls to shit.

Not to mention, I feel like a reason why game budgets get overblown is the focus on story (cutscenes) with mocap actors, voice acting, etc which would take cost away from the core of the game where maybe story wasn't always the focus, or they try and streamline the gameplay out of existence to appeal "everyone" which usually goes in hand with a hand-holdy "cinematic" experience.
