A Trooper X-mas
(this is fictional story, but the facts in it is true)

It was yet another boring day for the tiny Stormtrooper who wandered around aimlessly on the Deathstar. He was very small and had been since the day he was bor. Because of that the other troopers would tease him, just because he was only 30 centimetres.

Heck, he had been in the washing machine so many times he could recognise which panties belonged to Darth Vader himself.

Which wasn’t that hard, since the dark lord had a fetish for more feminine under garments.

Ohh well, not that it mattered to the tiny guy.

He just wanted to go on an adventure to a place where people would like him despite of his small frame.

The trooper let out a loud sigh and stared longingly out the window… Or he would have if he was tall enough, so instead he stood staring into the white wall like an idiot.

“Can’t I have just one Christmas where I’m not chased by trooper smell-a-lot’s stupid dog or put inside the turkey?” he said to himself hoping for some kind of miracle to happen.

“…..yyyyyan” a voice suddenly said right behind him.

“Huh?” spinning around on his feet he was surprised to find a white cat staring at him “Ehhhh?!?!?”

His eyes bulged to the brink they almost popped out of his helmet.

The creature wasn’t that much taller than him, but was extremely fluffy and cute. Especially its tiny ribbon attached to her left ear was so kawaii, he felt like squealing like a teenager who was at a Justin Bieber concert.

Wait a minute here, the trooper thought to himself while pointing a shaking finger at the kitten.

“You’re Hello Kitty! Or… one of them?” tilting his head to the side he felt super confused “Is this even allowed for Trademark or Copyright?”

“Nyan” the cat purred lovingly before it bonked his helmet with her furry paw.

“But what does that mean?” he managed to ask, before everything around him turned black.





“Ngh…” the trooper groaned loudly as he gained consciousness.

Where was he and why did it feel like his body was bouncing around?

Oh no, he was eaten by a gigantic alien again wasn’t he?

Opening his eyes, he was rather surprised to find himself in a handbag that was dangling from a female woman’s shoulder.

Wuuuuuut?! He glanced down and saw an image of Ichigo from Bleach on the item he was in, before turning to look at the human expecting to see her looking evil and cruel.

“Don’t worry little buddy” she smiled and gently stroked his helmet with her finger “I’m here to give you a new forever home and show you some of the interesting stories about this city we live in”

“I don’t get it, who are you?” he asked feeling rather uncomfortable.

“Call me Coffee, I’m your new human friend” she smiled genuinely which oddly made him feel a lot better.

“Mkay… I’m John”

“Pleasure to meet you John” Coffee reached a finger towards him, which he shook with his own fist.

“Likewise I guess”

And with that the adventure began.

“Waaaaaahhhh!” John fell backwards at the wondrous sight.

“Mmm, we have a lot of lakes here in Denmark and in the old days they were considered as mysterious. Some thought they were bottomless and so rumours emerged that some of the lakes contained trains and people on horses who had gotten lost. It’s a lie though, but through history it’s proven that we’ve always had some rather strange relationships with water. I mean there are some swamps that had a religious status, where people and precious items were sacrificed to please the gods. Though we don’t know exactly what they believed in back then, but we know but they relied on nature, so it’s likely they believed in spirits and not gods”

“Uh-huh…” the trooper nodded when something caught his eye “That’s a huge fish! I’m gonna blast it with my gun!”

“What’s that?!”

“It’s called Limfjorden, it’s a gigantic lake that separates northern Jutland from the main land”

“So huuuuuuge!!!” he gasped loudly, his eyes sparkling with wonder.

“You know people on this side of the city won’t recognise the other side as part of the real city. It’s silly but we’re like: the only good thing those guys have is a pretty sight”

“Ohh”

“Limfjorden was very important for travelling back in days, especially the Vikings used it a lot. Not only to travel between the two coasts, but also to go further like Norway and Sweden. A long time ago we owned those countries and of course we’ve been at war with them multiple times. However the problem child has always been Sweden, which we’ve fought against the most”

“Reminds me of Darth Vader, he really hates the rebels… and short people” John said more to himself than anyone else.

“There’s nothing wrong with being short”

“Tsch, I guess that’s why they flush me out the toilet” John snorted “Do you know how long it takes to clean this suit from sh…”

“Ohh look!” Coffee interrupted while pointing eagerly at a huge chair “You wanna feel like an emperor?”

“Wait… ahhh-ta-ta-ta-ta, stop man handling me woman!” squirming he tried getting free, but it was no use against her strength.

“Praise the new emperor John Mac Bacon with extra cheese!” Coffee hummed while bowing in a rather clumsy way.

“… that’s not my name…” his eyebrow twitched with annoyance, but after a short time he had to admit it felt pretty good sitting on a throne.

“Is that one of your war machines?” John gasped loudly while following the huge ship with his eyes.

“It’s just a ferry, we use it to transport people on and off the island called Egholm.There’s about 50 people who inhabits it and it has a very unique nature compared to the rest of the country. However the politicians want to make a new bridge to the other site and some suggest it should go through the island”

“Ohh?”

“I mean think of the frogs!” Coffee yelled sounding frustrated

“The uhm… frogs?”

“The lake frogs over there are really rare!”

“So!” feeling uncomfortable John tried to change the subject “Is that the only island that belongs to your country?”

“Ohh no” she shook her head, instantly changing her mood “We have about 400 of them, where 72 are inhabited”

“Holy hell!”

“I know, but hey look at this over here…”

“Uhm… blocks?” John felt disappointed as he took in the huge gray stones.

“It’s the only parts remaining from the Second World War, where they used this place for water planes. These cement blocks were part of a system to get the planes out of the water if they had to be repaired. It was a valuable place for the Germans, because it was rather central for fighting against Norway and England. They called this place for Seefligerhorst Aalborg”

“Why would you wanna bomb those countries?”

“We didn’t but because Denmark was neutral, we just accepted what happened. Or the majority did, there was a lot of rebels who did a lot of sabotage. A lot of those groups got caught though and was killed”

“That’s sad”

“Indeed, but we had it pretty well compared to a lot of other countries”

“So uhm… what’s next?”

“Aalborg defensive and garrison museum look!”

“Why is there a fence around it?” John asked curiously “Is it a prison?”

“Naw, I just don’t have access to the place, you need to pay a fee to go there. Its pretty dope in there though, since they have a lot of old was machines an weapons. Like that tank over there”

“Ahh man I wanna know everything about that place” the trooper drooled and dreamed about all the items the museum might contain.

“Me too, but I’m running out of time making this story” Coffee sighed, her shoulder slumping down “There’s canons, aeroplanes, tanks, submarines, hand weapons… essentially everything the Danish military have used in combat”

“Ohhh my I can’t even phantom… a-guuuuuu!”

*faints*

“Mmm, what are you…” John grumbled feeling disoriented for a few seconds before his eyes found a very large cat that was sniffing him “Ahhhh!”

“Aww, you got a cat kiss” Coffee chuckled warmly.

“I don’t want that I want weapons!”

“You’re being a grumpy butt, now come on time to go to bed”

“No! You can’t force me to! Yaaargh, stop it! Stooop iiiiit!”

The woman paid him no mind as she snuggled him underneath the blanket besides her plush.

“Oy! OY!” John shouted when he suddenly spotted the huge fluffy white thing on the bed.

“Nyan” the kitten greeted him.

“Okay I might be a bit tired after all” he yawned loudly and before long he was snoring peacefully.


It had been a long day for the short trooper but it had been fun to have his own little Christmas adventure.

Traditional Danish X-mas food

So there’s a lot of different stuff we like to consume during this season. On the 24th of December we get the biggest feast, which includes boiled potatoes, red cabbage, kale, gravy, small potatoes fried in sugar and butter. Ohh and potato chips to dip in the gravy!

It’s different what type of meat we eat. There’s always a main source of meat which is duck, goose or roasted pig. Some also make “medisterpølse” which is a special type of sausage that’s boiled and then fried in butter.

Depending on the person making the food, one or more of the types of meat is served. We got roasted duck, rib roast and “medisterpølse”

After that we eat desert which is called “Ris a la mande”. The base of it is made from a rice porridge that’s often made a few days before. We do this because we serve the rice porridge as a meal on its own and then use the leftovers to make the desert.

The first dish is called “Risengrød” and is served with cinnamon, sugar and a bit of butter on the top of it.

For “Ris a la mande” we make whipped cream and spice it with vanilla, sugar and almonds, before putting in the leftovers from the rice porridge. This is then served with a sweet warm cherry sauce.

Now for the fun part: There’s a whole almond hidden in the desert and whoever finds it wins a prize!

This is often something nice like chocolate or it can be a game of some sort. It depends on what the host buys. Traditionally it was always a pink pig made in marzipan the person would win.


After Christmas we often meet with friends and family to eat lunch (called “julefrokost”). We often have several dishes for this event and some are more common than others.

Traditionally rye bread is served and then there’s a vast variety of toppings like:

• Warm lever pate with fried mushrooms and bacon
• Meat balls called “frikadeller”
• Pickled herring with cold curry sauce
• “Medisterpølse” with red cabbage
• Battered fish with “remoulade” (it’s a curry like sauce with pickles)
• Smoked salmon with a pate made with eggs
• “Sylte” with mustard and pickled beets

- “Sylte” is boiled pig in gel and according to tradition was made from a pig’s head


Another dish is called “tarteletter”which essentially is chicken sauce that’s filled into baked cups.
This is meal that requires a lot of time to make, if you do it the right way. My mom taught me how to do it, like her mom taught her. Which is why I don’t have exact measures for the ingredients, but this is essentially what you do to make the sauce:

• Boil a chicken with some carrots, leeks, onions and peppercorns
• Do this until the meat is so tender it falls off the bone
• Save the water/soup it was boiled in for later
• Pull the meat apart with your fingers, so it is in smaller edible sizes
• Take a good chunk of butter and melt it in pot
• Then add a few spoonfuls of flour and mix it
• Now you open a can of asparagus and put the water into the pot
• Take the soup/water the chicken was boiled in and add some of it, until the sauce reaches the right thickness
• Add the amount of canned asparagus and chicken you want
• When the ingredients are hot, it’s done!
• Ohh and don’t forget to taste the sauce once in a while, you might wanna add some salt and pepper (or lemon if you feel adventurous)

Buy the baked shells, put them in the oven for a few minutes, fill it with sauce and voila!
