Because they consider gender to be purely a social construct. The less unreasonable ones among that group do believe that there are only 2 sexes (which is what you actually have down there and your biological make up in general) but that the traditional binary gender distinction is too rigid and oppressive to cover people's sense of identity.

Of course, I think that's total bs because while there are people who do feel like something other than their sex, the vast majority of people aren't like that and while we should allow trannies and what not to do what they want with themselves, this idea that we need to abolish the traditional definitions to accommodate exceptions rather than just acknowledging that they are exceptions to the standard rule is bullshit and done for political points.
