They literally butchered the biggest names in the superhero business while Marvel used characters like Iron Man and Thor whom the general public didn't even know much about and made a fortune out of them.

DC literally had the rights to all of their heavy hitters, a ton of money and a great reputation coming off of Nolan's triology. Instead of playing their cards right for long-term success which would've been guaranteed, they chose the quickest and most half hearted route they could.
