Actually, I wasn't even talking about the movie or the casting at all. I was talking about Disney's Aladdin which happens in India apparently and the characters wear Indian clothes and Jasmin (which isn't supposed to be named that) has a tiger...etc

It's supposed to be set in Middle East, everything about it indicates to this; it's an Arabic folktale most likely. But since it's hard or almost impossible to trace its origin properly the one who decided to add it to the 1001 nights took the liberty to add in the Chinese origin.

I have no problem with that as long as she can act. Arabs themselves don't have a particular genetic trait that define them, they're pretty diverse and there are debates to who/which should be considered real Arab and which should not (including even people from the ME region). So the debate is kinda moot.

The Jasmin name doesn't make sense. Though if the Sultan decided to name her with the Arabic word for Jasmine, that'd make total sense.

It'd also make sense for her to have a tiger. Sultans were crazy about keeping exotic pets. It is well documented that they kept cheetahs, lions, tigers, and others. It'd make sense for the Sultan to have gifted Jasmine a Caspian or even a Bengal tiger.

The Arabic word for Jasmine is just 'Yasmine', 'Yasamine' or 'Yasmina' sometimes . But that's not her real name, she's supposed to be called Badr el Bodour, which is difficult to pronounce for non-Arabs, I guess.
